Article 1: Name
The hereby-signing countries, Bulgaria, Greece, Israel, Romania, Turkey, Serbia & Montenegro and Cyprus (full member after acceptance by EASO), have decided to establish a scientific network by the name: Balkan Network for the Study of Obesity.

Article 2: Aims

  • To encourage and support activities related to research on the prevention and treatment of obesity.
  • To facilitate communication between members of the Balkan countries on related issues.
  • To organise the Balkan Congress on Obesity.
  • To promote the study of obesity in the interbalkanian field through the scientific cooperation of scientific associations, interested institutions, universities and other bodies.
  • To promote research and teaching in all levels of education in the area of obesity.
  • To promote the establishment of related Institutes and Research Scientific Centres.
  • To contribute to the general scientific knowledge, education and progress in the area of obesity of the member Balkan countries.
  • To promote peace and friendship among the people of the Balkan countries.

These aims can be achieved by:

  1. The Organisation of congresses, conferences, meetings and discussions.
  2. The cooperation and development of relations with other international and regional associations and organisations.
  3. The submission and implementation of common Balkan, European, or international scientific and research programmes.
  4. The edition and publication of scientific researches (newsletter, journal, electronic publications, etc.) within the Balkan countries.
  5. The subsidy and organisation of programmes and or/ seminars with aim to the development of scientific knowledge as well as professional standards in the prevention and treatment of obesity.
  6. The development of any other related activity proposed by any member of the network that will be considered necessary by the administration of the network.

Article 3: Administration
The network will be administered by the Administrative Committee that will consist of 3 persons (President, General Secretary and Treasurer). The members of the Administrative Committee will be elected every three years from the national representatives. The Administrative Committee plans, coordinates and executes the whole activity and operation of the network and acts for the success of its aims.

Article 4: Membership
Members are the national associations for the study of obesity of the Balkan countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Romania, Turkey, Serbia & Montenegro). Each country is represented by one national association for obesity, which must be a member of EASO. Each country nominates a "national representative" who will constitute the official link between his country and the administration of the network. National associations and not individuals gain nomination.

Article 5: Duration
The duration of the network is not determined.

Article 6: Income of the network
1. The annual membership fee by each country.
2. The percentage of the net profit of the Balkan Congress of Obesity will be decided every time by the General Assembly and will be no less than 20%. The remaining net profit will go to the organising country.
3. Any other legitimate source.

The Network can fund various activities according to its aims.

Article 7: Registered Office
The registered office of the network will be located in the offices of the Hellenic Medical Association of Obesity.

Article 8: Terms of the organisation of the Balkan Congress on Obesity (BCO):
1. The network will organise the Balkan Congress on Obesity (BCO) every second year.
2. The duration of the congress will be at least two days.
3. The official language will be English.
4. The hosting country will be selected alphabetically. Satellite symposia of the BCO could take place in a different country in reverse alphabetical order should there be interest.
5. The organising committee will consist of the members of the board of the national associations at the selection time.
6. The scientific committee of the conference will be set up at least ten months prior to the congress. The scientific committee will consist of the Administrative Committee plus a person from the local organising committee and the president of the previous BCO committee.
7. The national association of the hosting country will be responsible for the financial management of the congress.
8. The hosting city must be able to provide the required facilities, air connections and proper accommodation for the participants.
